The Ranunculus’ bright ruffled petals beckon warmer weather. From February to May, Ranunculus blooms star in bouquets for all occasions. They come in many different varieties, from the common buttercup head to the elusive Clooney, that are impossible to look past.
The ranunculus’ signature look is the layers-on-layers of roughly scalloped papery petals, making one large bloom of Spring sunshine. To add to their delightfulness, they symbolize attractiveness and charm -- regardless of their color. The color options are endless; a spectrum of pinks, vibrant reds, orange, sunny yellows and golds, white, purple… basically any color that makes a statement in a bouquet. These stems are truly magical.
As mentioned, the Ranunculus family has quite the selection. The most common ranunculus is the Persian, which comes in the big color variety and is most commonly seen in arrangements. The big-headed Clooney only blooms for a few short weeks out of the year and are usually soft-pink or white, so spotting one of these in a bouquet offers a pretty special experience (and you’ve likely seen them in a Lilium bouquet!).
The butterfly ranunculus has also made an appearance in a Lilium arrangement, and is much smaller and more dainty than most ranunculus. They have a slight layer of wax that gives them a shimmer effect -- making them last longer and also flutter like elegant butterfly wings.
If Buttercup was your favorite Powerpuff Girl, you’ll be excited to learn that her color should have been yellow after the Buttercup Ranunculus flower! These ranunculus generally aren’t as filled out as typical Persian, but most yellow ranunculus get lumped under the Buttercup name.
If you’ve been following @liliumfloral on Instagram, you’ve definitely seen a few Ranunculus stems. Act quickly if you want one, these beauties will be out of season when June starts!
